Alot
of
crazy
life events these past six years left me
wiped out and lost. As my drag queen disco friends would say in the
Seventies, I
was shipwrecked! I was an obsessive manic artist who had been through
the wringer which usually feed my creativity but I felt empty and
unispired.
Then the 2004 presidential election happened. A friend upset and
spouting conspiracy theories called
me throughout the presidential election evening saying "We are doomed!
Who will save us? Who? There is no one!" . To make her laugh everytime
she called and asked her question I would look around my studio and my
junk and toys and soon found myself answering - I have a call out to
Xena, Batman said he's not busy, he will find Robin and be right over,
Lucy and Ethel are gathering the Tuesday evening Wednesday Womans club
to find an answer, Angela
Cartwright just programmed the robot to see if he knows...you get the
idea. Soon she was laughing and and said Thanks for the salvation, I
think I can make it now. I was suddenly inspired and grabbed
scrap wood, the saw, the paints, found my hammer and nails and started
to sacrifice the very things from my toy box in the search for
salvation.
It's five years
since that election and already the 2008
elections have come and went but I have noticed from fans and talking
to folks at my studio that we still need the thought of salvation cause
the world can still be a big scary lonely place somedays.
My first
show at
Highways Gallery was curated by a friend, Mary Milelcyzk who on viewing
the first 25 pieces gave me a show. The first exhibit featured 300
pieces of art. I'm a little bit of a manic. Since that first show
in 2005 about 500 pieces or more have been created.
My shipwrecked
soul found land. I hope this art in it's own silly
way inspires and gives people a laugh. Our planet is a giant damaged
spaceship moving through the sky. Salvation to me is a nice and
comforting thought. We might not be able to save this big big world but
maybe we can save out little corner where we and others
live.
