LA ART PICK OF THE WEEK
CINDY DESANTIS
Assemblage artist Cindy DeSantis began working on her current installation of assemblage works, SOS (Save our Ship), while watching last november's election returns. She picked up a hammer and banged out her red-stae frustrations and some new pieces - and she hasn't stopped since. The theme of this 200-piece plus show centers around cries for help. These obsessively crafted works - created on scrap wood with hand-painted text, pop icongraphy and ephermera gathered from thrift stores, yard sales, Happy Meals and eBay - confront our darkest fears through their sheer simplicity and utter silliness . The toys work well as metaphors for the calamities that befall us: Think Pepon Osorio meets Noah Purifoy on Sesame Street. At Highways, 1651 18th St., Santa Monica; opening reception Sat., Jan 29, 6-8 pm.; Sat-Sun., 6-8 pm., thru Feb 27. (310)453-1755. - Marcus Kuiland-Nazario
